What is baccarat?
Baccarat is a game rich in history and class, a table game often associated with high-rollers and royal personalities. It’s known for its straightforward gameplay and sophisticated aura. Baccarat has roots that stretch back to the 15th century in Italy and France. Its name is derived from the Italian word ‘baccara,’ which means zero, a reference to the many cards in a deck that have a value of zero. The game has been a favorite among French royalty and remains a hit in modern casinos, both land-based and online. In this guide, we will delve into the rules of baccarat and explore some of the most popular strategies players use to increase their chances of success.
Basic rules in baccarat
In baccarat, the goal is to have a hand that has a point value as close to 9 as possible. The game is typically played with six to eight decks. Players have three betting options: on the banker, the player, or a tie (draw). Hand values are calculated by adding the values of the cards together and only considering the unit digit. For example, a hand consisting of a 7 and a 5 card would have a value of 2 (7+5 = 12, we only take the 2). The game begins with four cards being dealt, two to the ‘player’ and two to the ‘banker,’ with the option to draw an additional card under certain circumstances.
Card values and points system
Mastering Baccarat begins with an in-depth understanding of card values and the unique point system in play. This system is fundamental to any strategy and is crucial for both new and experienced players. Let’s dive into it:
Card values
2-9: These cards hold their face value. A 3-card is worth 3 points, an 8-card is worth 8 points, and so on.
10s, Jacks, Queens, and Kings: These cards are all worth 0 points.
Ace: This card is worth 1 point.
Points system
Calculating the hand’s value: To determine the value of a hand, add the first two cards together. If the sum is a two-digit number, ignore the first digit.
Example: A hand with a 7-card and an 8-card sums to 15, but is actually only worth 5 points in Baccarat.
‘Naturals’: This refers to a situation where the total value of the first two cards is either 8 or 9. This is the best hand in the game, and if a player gets this, they automatically win unless the other hand is also a ‘natural’ and has the same or higher value.
Baccarat strategy
Baccarat is known for its simplicity, but behind this simplicity lies a range of strategies that can help players maximize their chances of winning. Below, we explore some of the most popular strategies:
the "Martingale strategy"
Concept: This is a progressive betting strategy where you double your bet after each loss until you win. Once you win, you revert to your original bet.
Application in Baccarat: In Baccarat, the Martingale strategy can be applied by consistently betting on either the player or the bank. However, it is worth noting that this strategy carries a high risk, especially during a longer losing streak.
the "Paroli strategy"
Concept: Contrary to the Martingale strategy, here you double your bet each time you win, and revert to your starting bet after a loss.
Application in Baccarat: In Baccarat, it’s a strategy that seeks to capitalize on winning streaks, which can potentially result in substantial gains if luck is on your side.
